Personality:

Positive trait:

Ambition - Yuri is a competitor first and foremost, and it hell-bent on being the best no matter how hard he has to work for it. He dedicates himself completely to his goals and does not let anything get in his way, which is the driving force of his character and his relationship with Yuuri Katsuki. He sees Yuuri as a rival, and Viktor as a person to rise above, and is constantly trying to best them-- it’s more than that, though, as Yuri has something to prove to the entire world. Despite his youth and inexperience, he has made a huge name for himself already, having won his first gold medal at fifteen, and he has no intention of slowing down.

Negative traits:

Anger - Yuri, to put it mildly, has an anger problem. He lacks restraint in all his emotions, but he tends to lash out in anger the most, channeling most of his feelings that way. His first introduction into the show is when he kicks Yuuri’s bathroom stall door and shouts at him what a loser he thinks he is. When he comes to Japan in search of Viktor he literally runs around screaming his name in hopes of finding him. He flings insults at nearly everyone he speaks to, is incredibly rude and demanding, and has an exceptionally foul mouth. It’s probably reasonable to assume that his acting out is somewhat of a defense mechanism, as well as the result of a lot of resentment regarding his personal circumstances (lack of a parental presence, pressure placed on him as a young athlete etc). Regardless of the reasoning, it’s a big part of his personality and the reason why people call his off-the-ice persona the ‘Russian Punk’.

Perfectionism - The darker side to Yuri’s ambition is his intense drive to be the best and to crush his competition, who he often sees as his enemies. Therefore Yuri tends to fixate on winning and works himself extremely hard to achieve his goals. He tells Lilia he will ‘give his body and soul’ to her in order to pursue the perfection he needs to win, and hyper-focuses on technique during his skating routines to his own detriment. He holds himself to a ridiculously high standard, even feeling dissatisfied by his Grand Prix Final victory--one that he secured in his senior debut at fifteen years old--because Yuuri’s free skate points exceeded his and he won by such a small margin. He later goes on to rework his Exhibition skate because of this dissatisfaction. He over-inflates his rivalry with Yuuri and takes it very seriously, and ends up pushing himself to win the Grand Prix Final not only for his own accomplishment but to prevent Yuuri from retiring so he can continue to compete against him.

Self-doubt - Despite the confidence Yuri displays to the world and his occasional moments of arrogance, Yuri is exceptionally hard on himself and it shows in his internal dialogue. He performs spectacularly at Hot Springs on Ice and receives compliments from everyone, but is completely unable to see past Yuuri’s performance and how much better he thinks it was than his. As mentioned before, he wasn’t satisfied with his victory at the Grand Prix Final either. He tends not to enjoy his own successes because he is so intent on being better and doing more, which has the potential to become dangerous later on.

Powers and Abilities: Yuri is a very talented athlete, skilled in figure skating and ballet. He’s flexible, agile and can land a flying kick like nobody’s business. Aside from that, he’s a normal person without special powers.

Inventory: Yuri will arrive with his phone, his skates and guards, and his cat Puma Tiger Scorpion.

DUPLICITY UPDATES:

cw noncon, PTSD

Yuri has been in Duplicity for almost two years now, and not only has he physically aged but he has also been through a lot of shit that has in some ways altered his personality. He has severe PTSD after several traumatic events occurred in quick succession during the game's Fort Harmony event-- including his designation abruptly being changed from Dominant to Sumissive, witnessing a violent public execution, and being raped during the 'chase' event. Yuri developed a problem with alcohol after dealing with all of this--he's in the recovery process now--and his Worst Trait has changed from Anger to Fear.

During the course of the game Yuri endured two other assaults--the latter of which happened when Yuri was put through SLUT training due to a clerical error--and the rise of the Creator, who for Yuri symbolizes all the things he fears about Duplicity. As a result of all of this Yuri has severe anxiety and a crippling fear of LIES and the SIN guards, recurring panic attacks and flashbacks, hypersexuality and a penchant for reckless behavior. To treat this he had started attending regular therapy sessions with Hannibal Lecter about a year ago, and since then has Contracted with him and is now his permanent Submissive.
